hobbiton

Hobbiton
The Shire set from the Hobbit

Because Vincent and I liked the Lord of the Rings movies, it was only fitting to do some tours (like the movies, but not in a dorky way.. ;) . I was most excited about going to Hobbiton – the set where they actually filmed the Hobbit. This is the new set. The Shire set used for the LOTR trilogy was torn down to make this one.

We got a little turned around trying to get to the Shire’s Rest but we made it! You go on a 15 minute ride INTO the “Shire” and the landscape is to die for. You walk down the little gravel path lined with stones (Gandalf and Frodo rode the carriage through there) and there it is – The Shire! Our tour guide was ah-mazing. She was funny and knew a ton of cool behind the scenes things (in the “overall shot” of the Shire, you see that tree at the top of the hill above Bag End? Yea – it’s fake. A bunch of University of Auckland students made it).

At the end of the tour, we got to go into the Green Dragon and have some ale. It was an awesome experience that I highly recommend for movie lovers.

  1. Can you really admit to liking LOTR and then say "not dorky" in the same sentence? I'm just wondering ... :p

    1. This is actually the 2nd set - the original used in the LOTR trilogy was replaced by this one with they filmed the Hobbit. This set is much cooler than the old one! Definitely a bucket list item if you like LOTR! :)
